Flutter Kick “Doming” Fix — Deep Core Re-Engagement

by @Sierra Specht · Stop your belly doming: engage the deep core flat, pulse one leg at a time, and rebuild the posterior chain postpartum. · 5 exercises · 8fps GIFs

💡 How to follow: If your abs dome (belly pops up) during flutter kicks, your deep core is checking out — you're training nothing. The fix: set the core first (squeeze, flat back, navel pushed into the ground), pulse ONE leg at a time for 15 each leg × 3 sets, keeping the low back glued down the entire time. When doming shows up, take a deep breath, exhale it all out, and push the back into the floor before moving. Once single-leg is clean, rebuild toward both legs.

The Problem — Doming = Deep Core Checked Out

The Problem — Doming = Deep Core Checked Out

When you do flutter kicks with both legs and your belly domes/sticks out, your deep core (TVA) is disengaged — you see the belly rise as the low spine loses its anchor.

  1. Doming = deep core checked out
  2. Belly pushing UP = lost connection
  3. Not actually training your core

The Fix — Engage Before Moving

The Fix — Engage Before Moving

Core is already squeezed BEFORE the movement starts. Back is flat on the ground and the belly button is pushed INTO the ground.

  1. Squeeze the core first
  2. Back flat on the ground
  3. Belly button pushed into the floor

Single-Leg Pulse — 15 Each × 3

Single-Leg Pulse — 15 Each × 3

Pulsate one leg at a time without letting the back come off the ground at all. 15 each leg, 3 sets. Looks easy; done right it challenges as hard as both-leg flutter kicks.

  1. Pulse one leg, keep the other down
  2. Low back NEVER leaves the floor
  3. 15 each leg × 3 sets
  4. Slow and controlled, not big kicks

Doming Reset — Breathe + Push Down

Doming Reset — Breathe + Push Down

When the tummy sticks out, take a deep breath in, exhale ALL the oxygen out, and push the back into the ground before starting the movement. Core engaged = safe to move.

  1. Deep breath in
  2. Exhale all the oxygen out
  3. Push the back INTO the ground
  4. Only then start the movement

Progression — Rebuild to Both Legs

Progression — Rebuild to Both Legs

Once single-leg pulsing is clean and doming-free, work back up into both-leg flutter kicks. Post-baby, the single-leg version is the honest baseline.

  1. Single-leg clean first
  2. Then add both legs back
  3. Post-baby: start here, it still challenges
  4. Form > range — no doming at any stage
